öð [øh]

A folk string ensemble consisting of a string quartet, western guitar, mandolin, banjo, nylon strung guitar and resonator

öð is a longing for warmth.

Not the kind of warmth you can measure, but the kind you feel when someone stays a little longer at the table. When silence doesn't need to be filled. When music feels less like a performance and more like a space.

Behind the project is Faroese producer and composer Benjamin Djurhuus, who with the debut album öð [øh] steps forward with his own artistic universe for the first time. After several years working behind the scenes as a producer, songwriter, and collaborator, the need to create something personal, organic, and human began to grow.

Although the Faroe Islands are often associated with fog, wind, and darkness, öð moves in the opposite direction. The music feels like a hot cup of tea in your hands. Like looking out at the sea without needing to go anywhere. An attempt to create a place where you can breathe a little deeper and be present.

In a LIVE setting that idea becomes physical. With öð's "acoustic surround experience," the 8 musicians form a circle around the audience. They are no longer spectators of the concert, but placed in the middle of the music. Surrounded by acoustic instruments, voices, and resonance. öð is not about being the loudest in the room. It is about presence. About space. About staying a little longer.

The Idea

The project started as an idea to do an acoustic surround experience with the audience in the center, surrounded by stringed instruments.

I composed some music for it and arranged it for a string quartet, western guitar, mandolin, banjo, nylon strung guitar and resonator.

The word 'öð' stems from the word 'óð´ which in old norse can mean music, poetry and divine inspiration.
